Architecture and engineering: drafting of the renovation project for regional maintenance depots in Catalonia

The project to be developed by the Ingerop and BEWS joint venture includes the reconstruction of the current RENFE REGIONAL WORKSHOP, optimizing it and adapting it to new functional requirements.

    Objectives:

    • Construction of a new segregated road tunnel between the Palomar bridge and Santa Coloma boulevard.
    • Renovation of the car park and the train repair and maintenance areas of the current regional workshop.
    • An annex will be built to the main building, a parking area for light vehicles will be created, the roof of the main building will be refurbished for the future installation of photovoltaic panels, and the parking tracks and a section next to the Santa Coloma promenade of the high-speed line and conventional lines will be covered.
    • The structure of the new segregated road tunnel between the Palomar Bridge and the Santa Coloma promenade will be designed, with an exit from the depot.

The project is being drafted by BARCELONA SAGRERA ALTA VELOCITAT, S.A. (BSAV) and supervised by the technical services of RENFE FABRICACIÓN Y MANTENIMIENTO for everything related to the workshop and by ADIF for everything related to the railway channel coverage.

The project involves the construction of a station for the three commuter train lines that pass through Inca. It is a building of approximately 900 m² built on two levels:

      • Level 0 street – Parking, access, and passage between platforms.
      • Level 1 – Platforms.

The construction is being carried out on the existing railway viaduct.

      Scope

The development of the proposal involved the following work: study of alternatives, basic design, detailed and construction project. The various alternatives for mobility and integration of the different surrounding activity hubs, the regional hospital, the La Constancia and La Salle sports facilities, the interurban bus station, as well as the principles of urban planning and landscape integration were taken into consideration.

An accessible, functional, and efficient proposal was developed, taking into account the optimization of execution times, economic cost, and maintenance.

The project is located in the southeast of the municipality of Reus, in an area separated by the railway line, where a new urban crossing is planned to connect the two parts of the city, ensuring pedestrian traffic and convenient access to the adjacent Reus-Bellissens station project.

The station is designed as a modern and representative station, integrated into a square with a marked urban character.

Its design is based on the concept of modular architecture, which allows for standardization and reproduction in other locations. It is a functional station, where the whole is configured by the sum of its parts; different modules are developed in a linear fashion with the dimensions required by their specific program, adapting to the conditions of the terrain and the streets that surround it.

        Activities carried out :

        • drafting of the basic and construction projects for the Reus-Bellissens railway station.
        • urban integration, architecture, and engineering developed using BIM methodology, based on modular concepts that guarantee access to the station (all work will be carried out while the station is in operation).

Metro Line 1 spreads along 37km from north to south and crosses Abidjan lagoon via an exceptional bridge. The line will serve 20 new stations. Two intermediate terminus stations will allow operating the central section with a double frequency. For the concessionaire led by Bouygues and Alstom, Ingerop has provided the full layout, civil works and stations including the main track layout study and its impact on infrastructures, earthworks, geotechnical studies or hydraulic studies.

The high-speed rail project between Kenitra and Marrakech in Morocco is a major initiative aimed at continuing the modernization of the Moroccan railway network by extending the existing high-speed line further south.

This new line will significantly reduce travel times between the cities of Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakech. It will facilitate the movement of people and goods while contributing to the country’s economic and sustainable development, with strict respect for environmental challenges and the quality of life in the regions crossed.

This is therefore a key infrastructure project for Morocco, with positive impacts both for the population and the environment.

The Coventry Very Light Rail (VLR) project, led by Coventry City Council in collaboration with the University of Warwick, has appointed Ingerop as “innovative partner” to design a new type of tramline.

The project has the potential to revolutionize light rail systems all over the world, as VLR provides a new type of low weight rolling stock, allowing a fast and comfortable journey for all travelers.

Ingerop has developed a new type of track, easy and quick to install, largely prefabricated, which does not imply the reallocation of existing utilities networks (water, gas…), reducing significantly the cost and the construction time of the light rail projects for the cities.

M&E tender design, category 3 checking

In December 2012, a joint venture of HOCHTIEF (UK) Construction and Buckingham Group Contracting was awarded the £30m A57 Road Improvement Scheme. The design and build infrastructure project included the construction of a bespoke 39m long lifting bridge crossing the Manchester Ship Canal. The bridge was designed to also accommodate a new light rail link (Manchester Metrolink) from Manchester city centre to Port Salford.

The Salford Gateway transformed a vacant degraded site, creating thousands of new jobs over its development lifespan and raising the City of Salford’s profile. A new road was built with a new lift bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal and provisions were made to allow for the future expansion of the public transport system.

During the design and build tender phase, Rendel was invited by the Buckingham Group to join its bid team, along with consulting engineers Cass Hayward. Rendel performed the mechanical and electrical (M&E) tender design for the bridge and subsequent construction phase M&E design following contract award.

Under a separate contract, Rendel performed a Category 3 independent check of the structural works for the new lift bridge which will carry dual two-lane carriageways and pedestrian and cycling facilities over the Manchester Ship Canal. The steel orthotropic deck is raised from four 35m high reinforced concrete towers and the structure is founded on continuous flight augered (CFA) piles located within bunds retained by sheet pile walls with deadman anchors.

The Category 3 check was carried out to relevant Eurocodes and included coffer dam and anchor wall, piles, pile caps, abutments, lift towers, orthotropic steel deck and miscellaneous items such as bearings, expansion joints and parapets. Full consideration was given to soil-structure interaction for the check of the foundations and retaining walls. The superstructure was analysed using a detailed finite element model and an extensive investigation into the fatigue performance of the deck was carried out.

Technical-economic feasibility project Optional: Final project

The Municipality of Padua wants to expand its transport network with the construction of a new SIR 2 line and the extension of the existing SIR 3 line.

The design of the extension of the  SIR 3 line  has been possible thanks to a loan from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility that allocated part of the  extraordinary fund to the Municipality of Padua for the design of the works planned by the PUMS.

The route extends mainly on the existing road and in some sections next to it, after the extension of the body of the road. The line has a total length of approximately 5.8 km and provides for about 12/13 stops, including terminals. New infrastructure is planned, in particular a new bridge over the river Bacchiglione (L=110m) and a new bridge over the A13 motorway to be assessed at the PFTE. A terminal is planned at the university center of Agripolis, in the municipality of Legnaro.

Extending Sir 3 means implementing the entire SMART system, an interoperability system to be able to operate the existing SIR 1 and SIR 3 lines and the future SIR 2 line, and, in this case, offering a service to the thousands of commuters who commute every day to and from Padua, such as students and staff on Agripolis’ university campus.

                      Specifics

Ingerop is responsible for the design of all railway facilities and systems on the line.

The Padua tram is a tram system on Translohr technology tires.
