Sandy Bottom Small Ports Project

The single largest investment in the history of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force

In May 2014 Rendel were appointed by the Ministry of National Security, Government of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas to provide Project Management Services for Project Sandy Bottom Port Upgrade Works to accommodate the new Royal Bahamas Defence Force Fleet.

The project which is being designed and constructed by Van Oord for a cost of US$52 million comprises the upgrading of existing harbours at three locations, New Providence, Ragged Island and Inagua within the Bahamas group of islands.

Rendel’s role includes project management, procurement and contract advice, detailed design review and supervision of construction. The works include dredging, the construction of new breakwaters, quay walls, 150t ship lift, small boat jetties, ro-ro ramps, slipways, buildings, paving and utilities.

Presently dredging works and breakwaters are complete and the new quay wall construction comprising anchored steel sheet piles is on-going. Completion is envisaged in June 2016, despite works been affected by the onset of Hurricane Joachim last month. Fortunately the hurricane season has now ended for this year.
