SITE INVESTIGATIONS FOR THE PROPOSED SOMBWE HYDROPOWER SCHEME, DRC
Kipay Investments (Congolese Independent Power Producer) is investigating a hydroelectric plant proposed on the site of Sombwe in Mitwaba territory on the Lufira River. It is envisaged that a dam with a height ranging between 70 m to 100 m high will be required at this site to provide sufficient head and yield for the power generation purposes foreseen.

Two existing hydropower stations are in operation upstream of the proposed Sombwe site, including:

  • Mwadingusha hydropower plant, located at the Tshangalele Dam - 71 MW, 6 turbines – gross head, 116 m; and
  • Koni hydropower plant, located just downstream of the Mwadingusha plant – 42 MW, 3 turbines - gross head, 56.5 m.

The proposed site for Sombwe HPP is located 290 km north of Lubumbashi in the Katanga Province of the DRC.

INGEROP completed a reconnaissance investigation for the scheme in April 2016, which broadly revealed two potential sites for the hydropower scheme. The next phase is the feasibility study, which includes supplementary investigations.
