The Vaal River, South Africa's longest river after the Orange, is a key water source for the country. The Vaal Gamagara Water Supply Scheme (VGWS) was initiated in the late sixties with the purpose to supply Vaal River water to the arid areas of the Gamagara valley near Postmasburg and north thereof.
The aim of this infrastructure development was to enable large scale diamond mining at Lime Acres and the mining of iron ore and manganese at Beeshoek, Sishen, Mamatwane, Hotazel and Blackrock. Several local authorities receive water from the scheme of which the towns of Delportshoop, Postmasburg, Kathu and Hotazel are the largest. Phase 1 of the upgrade and refurbishment, aims to satisfy future (2030) demands of the local consumers as well as an allocation for Botswana, and has the capacity to convey additional water from identified groundwater source developments.
Ingerop will undertake the whole engineering design and project management, providing a wide range of quality, communications and marketing support, legal and environmental oversight, and contract management including procurement and construction supervision.
