INAUGURATION OF THE CANOPY, A LARGE SCALE PROJECT COMPLETED IN A RESTRICTIVE ENVIRONMENT
As part of the re-structuring of the Forum des Halles in Paris, the Canopy project aimed at integrating the Forum in its environment with the whole re-habilitation of its “underbelly” and bringing the entire project together under a large and translucent awning.

The inauguration and the official opening to the public took place on 5th April 2016 in the presence of the mayor of the City of Paris Anne Hidalgo.

INGEROP was responsible for the structure’s technical design, the design of 25.000 m² of public buildings and the project envelope. In spite of many constraints, the challenge consisted in:

  • limiting the total height of the construction to 14.50 metres,
  • using the existing supports only,
  • bridging the span of the canopy across more than 100 metres without intermediate supports.

By applying “Design Thinking” principles, combining technical feasibility, economic viability and people’s needs, the INGEROP teams managed to meet the stringent project requirements and implement a synergistic approach and creative thinking to promote innovation.

Exceptional constraints:

  • Maintaining the existing facilities in activity, despite a daily flow of more than 800,000 people;
  • Handling the information and data flows;
  • Testing and translating a complex geometry with global 3D Modelling and a parametric system for generating computational models;
  • Minimizing impact in the existing infrastructure;
  • Monitoring the quality of execution within strict tolerences.
