The "GASPN" software, developed internally at INGEROP, is an additional step in our approach to optimizing railway and road works.

15,000 level crossings are passed over by 16 million vehicles each day in France. In 2015, SNCF counted 111 collisions, some of which were fatal. Over the past 10 years, the number of accidents has decreased by 40% under structural measures carried out by SNCF. These accidents are caused in 1/3 of the cases by passing the level crossings in bad conditions.


SNCF has taken a step with Ingerop to improve the safety of these crossings.
Certain road configurations coupled with successive passes of railway maintenance over decades (or even centuries) tend to seriously deteriorate the crossing conditions of  humpbacks, hollows, or humps. Since road traffic regulations have not been evolved since the 1950s, 60% of the current fleet derogates from the rules that have become obsolete. The tools for controlling these configurations must necessarily progress in order to take new parameters into account, including, at the same time, exceptional vehicles.


 The methodology undertaken by Ingerop is based on three major axes:


  • Consideration of geographical location (rural or urban);
  • Integration of the track’s category (road and rail) and developed speeds;
  • Creation of a database integrating the geometrical parameters of a wide range of vehicles (ground clearance, front and rear overhang, wheelbase, etc.).

GASPN simulates the passage of vehicles on modeled terrain and gives a faithful representation of the existing state with an emphasis on the critical points associated with each category of vehicles. The study will then focus on the re-profiling of the pavement upstream and downstream of the crossings while influencing the intrinsic geometry of the tracks (also responsible for crossing discomfort). The aim is thus to erase the critical points detected in the preceding step in order to make a road geometric profile capable of crossing the vehicles supposed to pass the level crossings.
