GHANA: ROAD IMPROVEMENT BETWEEN ACCRA AND TEMA PORT
Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and Meridian Port Services (MPS) agreed to expand the existing Port of Tema. The expansion project includes a new port and container terminal and will require an improved road network that supports the growing traffic.

As such, MPS undertakes to upgrade the access road between the port and Accra-Tema motorway, a 19km motorway section of the National Route 1 (N1) and the existing Accra-Tema motorway to six lanes with the required slipways.

Rendel and Ingerop, supported by local consultants, are providing engineering design services for this significant national transport infrastructure project worth US$250m.

Using a FIDIC form of contract, the road project comprises the financing and development of the following:

  • The creation of a 3rd traffic lane in each direction of the Accra-Tema N1 motorway
  • The upgrading of the existing Tema roundabout by the creation of a new grade separated junction
  • The improvement of the road connection to the new container terminal operated by the concessionaire
  • The operation, maintenance and management of the road sections created.
